Symptoms of Diabetes

We are going to talk about the Symptoms of Diabetes for both type 1 and type 2. Both have similar symptoms but one can come quickly and the other more slowly.

Symptoms of Diabetes for Type 1

Type 1 diabetes symptoms can come on quickly and may include some of the following.

Increased thirst and frequent urination - excess sugar builds up in your bloodstream, fluid is pulled from your muscles and this could leave you thirsty. So you will drink more and have to urinate more also.

Extreme hunger - Since no insulin is moving the sugar in your body, you muscles and organs lose energy. You may experience intense hunger even after you have eaten. Without insulin the sugar in your food doesn't reach your energy starved muscles.

Weight loss - for those looking for weight loss this is not the way to go. Despite eating more to control the hunger cravings you may still lose weight - and rapidly. Without the energy the sugar supplies, your muscle tissue and fat stores simply shrink.

Fatigue - when you body is deprived of the sugar it needs for energy, you may become tired and irritable. (this explains my brothers mood swings, and now that I think about it even my niece Paige.)

Blurred vision - if you blood sugar is too high, fluid may be pulled from your tissues - including the lens of your eye. This could affect your ability to focus.

Losing feeling or feeling tingling in your feet.

Type 1 diabetes use to be called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes. Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age, but it is most often diagnosed in children, adolescents, or young adults.

Reminder: some people will have no symptoms before they are diagnosed with diabetes.

Symptoms of Diabetes forType 2

Symptoms for those with Type 2 Diabetes may develop slowly. You could have diabetes for years and not even know it.

Increase thirst and frequent urination

Increase hunger - without enough insulin to move sugar into your cells, your muscles and organs become depleted. Hunger is triggered.

Weight loss - despite eating more that usual, you may lose wight. Without the ability to use glucose, your body uses the fuel that is stored in your muscles or fat. Calories are lost in your urine.

Fatigue - cells are deprived of sugar, you become moody. (sounds like my older sister)

Blurred vision - same as type 1 diabetes

Slow-healing of sores or frequent infections - affects your ability to heal and resist infection.

Areas of darken skin - Some people with type 2 have patches of dark, velvety skin in the folds and creases of their body - usually in the armpits and neck. This condition called acanthosis nigricans, may be a sign of insulin resistance.

Dry Mouth

Headaches - loss of sugar from main organs - your brain is an organ...

Type 2 Diabetes is usually not diagnosed until health complications have occurred. Most often, diabetes symptoms are not experienced or the above symptoms develop gradually over time.
